We are excited to announce that !K7 has achieved B Corp certification, a significant milestone that underscores our dedication to social responsibility. But what exactly does being a B Corp mean?

What is B Corp Certification?

B Corp Certification is a designation that a business meets the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. It evaluates how a company’s operations and business model impact its workers, community, environment, and customers. Achieving this certification means that !K7 is recognised for our commitment to ethical practices and sustainability in all aspects of our business.

Our Mission at !K7

At !K7, we are committed to social responsibility within the music industry, encompassing our business, the environment, and our community. We believe that embracing this responsibility will create a better, more rewarding company for our entire team, stakeholders, and shareholders.

Transforming an organisation has a far greater impact than individual efforts alone, and that’s why we have long been working on our carbon reduction plan and carbon footprint report to track our progress since 2019. Already we have seen a significant reduction in our carbon footprint, though we understand that there is more work to be done.

This mission is at the heart of our journey to becoming a B Corp. It reflects our dedication to making a positive impact through our operations, from how we treat our staff to how we influence our environment and community.

The Importance of B Corp Certification

Earning the B Corp certification involved a comprehensive evaluation of our business model, operations, structure, and processes. It requires continuous improvement and a commitment to recertification every three years to ensure we maintain these high standards.

Being a B Corp means that we are part of a global movement of businesses that are committed to the highest standards of social and environmental impact. We believe that businesses can be a force for good, creating lasting, positive change far beyond individual efforts.

Our Efforts

Responsible and Sustainable Practices

We are committed to upholding responsible and sustainable practices both internally and externally. Our goal is to create a safe internal environment while minimising our environmental impact. By working collaboratively as a team and with our industry partners, we aim to address the harm caused by fossil fuel dependency and promote a more sustainable future for the next generation.

Our efforts in Diversity and Inclusion and Environmental Impact are driven by dedicated staff working groups. These groups continually evaluate our performance and encourage all team members to be part of the conversation.

Diversity and Inclusion

We strive for a workplace where all employees feel heard, valued, and fairly treated regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, neurodiversity, ability, mental and physical health, experience, or responsibility level. Discrimination and harassment are not tolerated, and we have clear guidelines in place to prevent them as part of our Code of Conduct. We collaborate with industry bodies like AIM and IMPALA to develop standards for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Environmental Impact

Through our Climate Working Group, we have set a company-wide target to achieve net zero in the future and significantly reduce our environmental impact. We work with groups like AIM, IMPALA and Murmur to develop sustainable practices and public policy advocacy. Our energy use and carbon footprint are monitored and analysed across all operations. The !K7 office is powered by a 100% green energy cooperative, and our servers also run on green energy. We focus on reducing energy use, production, and distribution impacts by using sea freight instead of air and implementing an overstock program to avoid vinyl destruction. Within the EU, our staff prioritise train travel to reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainable travel options.

As advocates for exceptional music quality and environmental responsibility, we’ve taken significant steps to revolutionise vinyl record production. We use 100% renewable vinyl pressing initiatives and house our records in FSC certified recycled sleeves.

For a more detailed breakdown of our environmental initiatives, take a look at our carbon reduction plan and carbon footprint report.

Community

We are embedded in the community of change. We helped found the Impala Sustainability Strike Force, aiming to make the European independent music sector more sustainable and aim for a carbon positive future.

We also have a seat on the board of advisors at Murmur, a registered charity, founded by leaders in climate strategy and the creative industries, enabling the worlds of visual arts and music to play their part in combating the climate crisis.

For the second consecutive year, the !K7 Music team has completed a social project in partnership with Ernst-Reuter-Schule (ERS) in Berlin Wedding. This collaboration provides tools and resources to students facing high rates of inequality, allowing us to give back to our local community.
