DJ-Kicks: Honey Dijon

Fashion icon, historian, commentator, activist, Grammy winner, and DJ—Honey Dijon does it all. Her achievements stem from a love of clubbing and DJing, from early Chicago parties to her role as a global dancefloor ambassador.

Growing up in Chicago, Honey hung out with legends like Derrick Carter and Mark Farina. With limited resources, she recorded mixes at friends’ houses. Moves to DC and New York brought her closer to success, with breaks from supporters like Tedd Patterson and Danny Tenaglia. She DJed at weddings, restaurants, and fashion events, learning her craft along the way.

’I’m a huge fan of research. So putting this compilation together was basically going into my dancefloor experience and finding gems I wanted to present to people that they may not have been familiar with or that they didn’t even know existed.

A house music enthusiast, Honey’s deep knowledge of underground labels shines through in this compilation. She blends past and present, unearthing forgotten gems like Psychedelic Research Lab’s “Keep On Climbing” and Sir Lord Comixx’s “Soul House.” The mix spans multiple eras and locations, featuring artists from Chicago, Paris, London, and more. It also includes a new Dijon track alongside recent works by Waajeed and Kiko Navarro.

For Honey, ‘The dancefloor to me is a sacred space,’ she explains. ‘I feel like I’m a facilitator of spirit through sound. Dancefloors are healing spaces, they’re sexual spaces, they’re joyful spaces, they’re liberating spaces. They’re places for people to discover who they are, they’re places to leave behind your worries, they’re places to celebrate with your friends, to dance, to get laid, to have fun. The dancefloor is a reflection of life and I take it very seriously.’ Black girl magic, indeed.
