DJ-Kicks: Modeselektor

Modeselektor, one of the most original acts to emerge from Berlin’s techno underground, enter 2025 in a period of transition. Earlier this year, the duo — Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary — moved into a new studio after many years based above the infamous KitKatClub in Mitte. After more than three decades of astonishing work, spanning cult labels, critically acclaimed albums and EPs, and era-defining releases as part of Moderat, they remain at the top of their game. In the same year that DJ-Kicks and !K7 Records celebrate their 30th and 40th anniversaries respectively, Modeselektor finally deliver their edition of the vaunted mix series..

Put together over a matter of days, the release features 22 tracks, including two original Modeselektor cuts, unreleased material, and field recordings from tour. Gathered in their new studio and shaped by instinct, the mix brings together a wide range of styles, from Slikback and Little Simz to Ben Klock & Fadi Mohem. Rather than making a straight club mix, Modeselektor set out to tell a story — something for listening in the car or at home, “weird, but not too much.”

The opening section begins with the tender pads of Szary’s “PREY,” before gradually shifting through changing moods and textures. Highlights include the world premiere of Kitschselektor, the previously unreleased “MEGA MEGA MEGA,” and Slikback’s stormy “Sea.” Across the mix, Szary’s more beatless and ethereal selections balance Bronsert’s dancefloor instincts, creating the tension and unexpected combinations that have always defined Modeselektor’s sound.
