Momoko Gill – Momoko

Strut proudly presents the debut solo album from producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Momoko Gill. Following her critically acclaimed collaboration Clay with Matthew Herbert, Momoko now steps forward in her own right with a remarkable first full-length statement.

Long one of the UK electronic and jazz scene’s best-kept secrets, Gill has brought her distinctive touch to work with artists including Alabaster DePlume, Matthew Herbert, Coby Sey, Tirzah, and Nadeem Din-Gabisi. A self-taught drummer, producer, songwriter and vocalist, her years of collaboration and extensive live performance have helped shape a singular compositional voice.

With Momoko, Gill emerges into the spotlight with an album that is entirely her own. Across its eleven tracks, jazz, songwriting, experimental music and electronic production meet in a sound shaped less by tradition than by instinct, feel and expression. Drawing on her experiences growing up in Japan and the US and now living in London, she brings a broad and deeply personal perspective to her music.

The album moves across a wide emotional and musical range, from the jazz-infused groove of ‘No Others’ and the reflective ‘Heavy’ to the dark force of ‘Shadowboxing’, the eerie instrumental ‘Test A Small Area’, and the powerful choral statement of ‘When Palestine Is Free’. Poetic, intimate and uncompromising, Momoko reveals the full scope of Gill’s vision in her own voice.
